CHRONIC PAIN prayer tee (leftover stock!)

from $40.00
sale

as an artist living with chronic pain, i am often meditating on how our world might look different if ALL bodies could contribute in ways that feel ok. there are so many issues here at play, especially capitalism (the root of so many ills!), ableism, and eurocentric productivity culture (within the aforementioned structures). still, this shirt is a reminder to dream new realities into being, and a protective wearable charm.

in the “pocket spot” is hand-lettered IN PAIN IN LOVE, and on the back across the shoulder blades says IN SOLIDARITY TOWARD A WORLD WHERE EVERY BODY IS VALUED. this is my prayer. talismans down the right arm are: a steaming medicinal bath featuring plant ally arnica, interpretations of two famous paintings depicting chronic pain, and a cane. after careful consideration and consultation with many of my beloved community members, i chose to feature Frida Kahlo’s incredible self portrait “Broken Column”. Kahlo was a Mexican painter and radical who survived both polio and literal impalement during a bus accident, and suffered intense chronic pain for much of her life. Her body of work famously deals head-on with this subject, making it a precious resource for anyone trying to understand a life lived in pain (and so much more). i am forever grateful to her for all her visions. “Christina’s World” is a painting that was so ubiquitous in my life growing up on the prairie, since it shows a rural farming scene. what i didn’t understand as a child is that the subject Andrew Wyeth depicted suffered from a degenerative muscular disease that left her legs immobile. she chose not to use a wheelchair, and rather to mostly crawl to get around. i invoke this here to draw attention to how those with chronic pain and/or disability are so strong, and how we must stubbornly interact with our world at times.

cobalt blue ink screenprinted on comfort colors brand (epically soft and garment-dyed look) longsleeve tees in a beautiful lavender color. the shirts have a relaxed unisex fit. 100% cotton.
